Obituary for Dean Harper

Dean Harper
September 26, 2017 at age 88. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne; daughters, Elizabeth Gambino, Anne (John) Taves, Carolyn Cohen and Mary Alice Harper; grandchildren, Jay and Chris Taves, Allyson and Max Cohen, Gia Gambino.

Dean was born in Ames, Iowa on January 5th, 1929 to Frances and Charles Harper. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1951 and a Masters in Sociology from Iowa State University in 1953. He moved east to New York City to study at Columbia University, where he received a Phd in Sociology. During this time, he also served in the US Army in non-combat duty in the Korean War. He met Jeanne in New York City, and they were married on July 5th, 1958. They moved to Rochester in 1958 and he spent nearly 60 years as a Professor of Sociology at the University of Rochester. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and spent many happy summers hiking through England and Wales with his wife. Above all, he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose unconditional love and support will be deeply missed.

MEMORIAL SERVICES will be held Monday, October 2nd, 1pm at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Music Program at Third Presbyterian Church or to Doctors Without Borders.
