Obituary for Lucile Rice (Witzeman) MD

August 11, 2017, age 91. Born in Akron OH on December 6, 1925, Lucile graduated from Carleton College in 1947 and completed her medical degree (M.D.) at Ohio State University School of Medicine in 1951. She interned at Rochester General Hospital, was an Emergency Room doctor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and then moved to Chicago to became a Nutrition Consultant for the Chicago Board of Health. It was there in June 1957 she married Rev. James A. Rice, and where their three sons were born. They moved to Rochester in 1965. After devoting herself to raising a family, she worked mostly outside of the medical field.

She loved nature and birds, travel, music, gardening, photography and church and community activities. In the 1960s she helped start the former School 24 library and also the Third Presbyterian Church Food Cupboard. She had been a member of Third Presbyterian Church since the family moved to Rochester. She and her husband Jim made many trips to South Dakota to see his family and to Witzeman family and sibling reunions in Ohio and Arizona.

She is predeceased by her husband, the Rev. James A. Rice and her siblings, Louis Jr., Robert and Mary. She is survived by her sister, Alice Edwards (Richard) of Toledo, OH; sons, Donald (Melissa) of New York City, Stephen (Anneclaire De Roos) of Philadelphia, and Douglas of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Rebecca and Eric Rice of Seattle WA, Alan and James Rice of New York, NY; great grandchild, Elizabeth of Seattle WA; sister-in-law, Susan Witzeman (brother Louis, deceased) and Janet Witzeman (brother Robert, deceased) of Phoenix, AZ, Shirlee Novotny (Jim’s brother Alan, deceased) of Batesland, SD and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at Third Presbyterian Church on September 9th at 11 AM. Interment will be at a later date in Silva-Rose Hill Burial Park in Akron, Ohio. In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St., Rochester, NY 14607 or the National Parks Conservation Association, 1300 19th St. N.W., Suite 300, Washington, DC 20036.
